What is car insurance?
Car insurance is a contract between you and your insurance company – you get the coverage you need in exchange for making premium payments to the insurance company.
Why do I need car insurance?
If you’re in an accident, you may have expenses for car repairs, property damage, medical bills, a rental car, lost wages and more. Insurance can keep those bills from becoming a burden. In addition, most states require drivers who own a vehicle to have car insurance – though mandatory minimum coverage and policy limits vary. To learn more about auto insurance, talk with an insurance agent.
What does car insurance cover and what are the different types of coverage?
Here are some of the most common auto insurance coverage options along with terminology you’ll typically see in many car insurance policies.
Auto coverage options
- Liability coverage – Most states require auto liability coverage, which can cover you for property damage to someone else’s vehicle or property and for bodily injury to others if you’re found responsible for an accident.
- Collision coverage – This coverage can offer protection for your vehicle if you’re in an accident with another vehicle or object, or your vehicle rolls over.
- Comprehensive coverage – This coverage can help cover damage to your vehicle that’s not caused by a collision from things like theft, fire, striking an animal, or a tree falling on your car in a storm.
- Loan or lease gap insurance coverage – If you finance or lease your vehicle and it gets totaled, loan or lease gap coverage can help you minimize out-of-pocket expenses by covering the difference between the current value of your vehicle and what's owed on it.
- Extended transportation expenses coverage – This coverage can be added to your car insurance policy to help pay for a rental car if your car is damaged in a covered accident. It can also help cover the cost of public transportation (such as a bus or train) or a car service.
Auto policy terminology
- Premium – The amount you agree to pay to an insurance company in exchange for personalized auto insurance coverage.
- Deductible – The amount of a covered claim that you’ll be responsible to pay out of pocket. The lower the deductible, the less out-of-pocket expenses you’re responsible for if an incident occurs. For example: If you choose a $500 deductible and have an accident causing $2,000 in damage to your vehicle, you’ll be responsible for the first $500 of a covered loss before insurance kicks in.
- Limits – The amount your insurance will cover for damages incurred by a car accident. Coverage limits may vary by coverage type and state.
Ways to save on car insurance
When pricing car insurance, keep in mind that you may qualify for auto insurance discounts. Where available, these discounts may offer savings for safe driving (not available in California or New York), being a good student, paying electronically and more. Additionally, purchasing multiple policies such as car and home insurance with the same company – known as bundling – may lower your costs as well.
Safe driver discount
Safe driving should be rewarded. If your household hasn’t had an accident, violation or major comprehensive auto insurance claim in three to five years, you could save money with our Safe Driver Discount. Note: This discount is not available in CA or NY.
Multi-policy discount
Bundle more and you could save more.
Good student discount
Policyholders with drivers who are fully enrolled in high school or college and are good students who maintain a “B” average or better may qualify for a discount on car insurance.
Travelers bundling options
Bundling your car and home policies with Travelers can help you save money with discounts on auto insurance, home insurance and other insurance products.
