What does renters insurance cover?
If you rent your home or apartment, remember that your possessions are not protected by your landlord’s insurance coverage. Renters insurance can help cover the costs of damage to your possessions and help protect you from the costs of personal liability claims made against you.
Renters personal property coverage
Renters insurance can help cover the costs of damage to or loss of your furniture and personal possessions – at home or away from home – caused by things like fire, lightning, windstorms, hail, explosions, smoke and vandalism. A renters insurance policy can also help protect you if your property is lost due to theft anywhere in the world.
Renters personal liability coverage and liability protection
In the event that a claim is made against you or you’re sued, your renters personal liability insurance coverage can help to cover the associated legal costs and related damages. Most renters insurance policies provide $100,000 (minimum) of financial protection for covered accidental bodily injury or property damage to others. Higher amounts of coverage are available.
Housing improvements
Renters may spend considerable time and money on alterations or improving their rental unit. Under a Travelers renters policy, you may apply up to 10% of your personal property coverage to repair or replace improvements made by you or acquired at your expense if damaged by a covered loss. Higher amounts of coverage are available.
Renters medical payments coverage
Medical payments coverage from Travelers generally covers up to $1,000 per person – regardless of your legal responsibility – when a covered accident involves bodily injury to others. Medical payments coverage does not cover you or your family members but can cover medical bills for injuries to your guests or visitors. Higher amounts of coverage are available. It may also provide coverage in other situations as well, including paying for medical care if:
-
An accident happens away from an insured location. For example, if you’re golfing and you hit a ball that strikes another player, your medical payments coverage can cover medical expenses.
-
An injury happens to someone away from an insured location and is caused by an animal you own.

Your landlord likely has insurance coverage for the building itself, but you may need a renters insurance policy to protect your personal possessions. Your renters insurance policy can also help protect you from liability claims if, for example, a visitor accidentally trips over your rug and breaks a leg and makes a claim against you to cover the costs related to their accident. Consider getting coverage that can help you rent with the peace of mind that you are covered.
