The Institute in Action: Building Cyber Resiliency in San Antonio
Business leaders joined the Travelers Institute in San Antonio at Cyber: Prepare, Prevent, Mitigate, Restore, an educational symposium aimed at helping organizations tackle evolving cyber threats. As part of a national series with tour stops across the United States, cyber experts from the public and private sectors shared insights into the current threat landscape and strategies for preparing for and responding to a cyber incident.
In San Antonio, Travelers found that 59% of small- to midsized business leaders believe that it’s inevitable that their business will fall victim to a cyberattack, and only 24% believe they understand enough about cyber to keep their businesses safe.
Attendees engaged directly with experts from the federal government’s Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), Mullen Coughlin, a law firm focused on data privacy and cyber incident response services, and Travelers. Here are a few of the top concerns shared from attendees in San Antonio:
Audience question: What cybersecurity resources are available to small businesses?
Ernesto Ballesteros, Cybersecurity State Coordinator, noted that CISA provides many no-cost cybersecurity resources and services, including cybersecurity and cyber hygiene assessments. CISA also has a portal for reporting a cyber issue, as well as resources available to assist organizations following a cyber incident. The best way to protect yourself, he said, is to increase your cybersecurity before a breach occurs.
Audience question: If a company notifies me that my data has been compromised and they offer free credit protection, should I take it? And should I sign up for protection at all three credit reporting bureaus?
If there is a breach of your personal data, Jennifer Coughlin, a partner at Mullen Coughlin, recommended taking advantage of these free offers by enrolling in credit protection from all three credit reporting agencies (TransUnion, Experian and Equifax), as well as any non-expiring credit monitoring and restoration services.
